The biannual Rachel Comey sample sale[1] is back, and well stocked with women's boots, shoes, chunky sweaters, and winter accessories to wear immediately. We stopped by during the friends and family preview today to find the new, smaller space cramped but packed with a great selection of merchandise for the ladies, and a surprisingly small selection of shoes for the men.
Don't worry, guys—we heard they are expecting a large shipment of men's shoes to arrive for the last half of the sale. With all men's shoes at $75 or three for $200, we are thinking you should wait for the restock to shop.
There are two rooms dividing the goods between newer stock and older development samples/men's shoes, and it's going to be a tight squeeze when the sale opens to the public tomorrow morning at 10am.
The second room is where we found the best deals. Shoes are organized by size, and most are one-off original samples, for $100 each or three for $250. See photos in the gallery for the selection of styles in each size range. The shoes found in boxes stacked on the side of this room are $150 each, and are not included in the three for $250 deal.
On the sample racks, we spotted denim collared shirts, metallic cheetah jacquard shorts, and drop-crotched knit shorts, all for $75. A red, white, and blue striped thermal and an oatmeal cable knit sweater looked especially cozy for layering, and are both priced at $100.
There is a variety of accessories available, from knit hats for $75 to perforated belts for $25, and perforated leather tote bags ranging from $100 for the small size to $250 for the largest size.
In the price-as-marked room, we found fall 2013 outerwear, including the Haven[2] coat in grey wool with a brown shearling collar for $384 and the Ardor[3] grey leather coat fully lined with brown shearling for $450. Other fall favorites include the black and white quilted sweatshirt for $200, and chunky knit pullover sweaters, cardigans, and sweater dresses for $200-$250.
The fall 2013 shoes sit in the back of this room, with boxes stacked high with varying sizes, all at 50% off retail price. The Whistle[4] slingback patent leather loafer is $200, and lace-up leather high tops are $212, and perfect for the current weather conditions. There are also plenty of boot styles, from pink suede Mars[5] booties ($201) to taupe pebbled leather Chase[6] boots for $236.
Women were changing among the men shopping for shoes, which indicated there were no private fitting rooms—only four mirrors, overcrowded with shoppers. They will restock merchandise for men and women throughout the sale. Hours are from 10am to 7pm Thursday and Friday, from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, and from 12pm to 5pm on Sunday.—Christina DeSmet
