AKRON — A Christmas tree made up of basketball shoes worn by LeBron James was just one of the unique trees on display during the 32nd annual Holiday Tree Festival.
This year’s event took place November 23 through December 1 at the John S. Knight Center in Akron.
Businesses, organizations, families and generous individuals donate fully decorated trees each year to the event in support of Akron Children’s Hospital. Proceeds support patient care programs, education and research.
The event is free for the public to attend. Money is raised through the sale of the trees.
There were more than 150 trees on display with a variety of themes this year. A big hit among little girls was the Hello Kitty tree, a number of boys were drawn to the sports-themed trees and everyone seemed to love the Santa tree.
The LeBron James Family Foundation donated the tree made up of shoes worn by NBA star and Akron Native LeBron James. The words “Never Forget Where I Came From” went around the tree and a “King James” crown adorned the top.
Many trees on display were sold as a package. A golf-themed tree was for sale for $600 dollars. It came with a fully decorated tree, two golf bags, numerous rounds of golf and a variety of other golf-related items.
Guests also had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for various packages. One of the packages included a flat screen TV, popcorn machine, leather chair and side table from Wayside Furniture, fully decorated tree and more.
The event also gave children the opportunity to write letters to Santa and create cards to send to kids at Akron Children’s Hospital.
Santa Claus was at the Holiday Tree Festival, plus there was live Christmas music performed by area choirs, face painting, food and other fun holiday activities.
