At that time, the computer and tablet bag industry wasn't in full swing as it is today, so I ended up carrying a small black (and rather plain) Eagle Creek bag with a shoulder strap with my Newton, an extra battery pack or three, and a spare stylus. Fast-forward to 2014, where we not only have bags and cases galore to protect our iPads, but they actually <em>look</em> good as well. The <a href="http://www.sfbags.com/products/ipad-cases/outback-solo-ipad.php" id="readabilityLink-1" name="readabilityLink-1" style="color: inherit; text-decoration: none;">Waterfield Designs Outback Solo</a><a class="readability-DoNotFootnote" href="#readabilityFootnoteLink-1" style="color: inherit;"><small>^[1] </small> </a> (US$89) is designed for Apple's newest full-size tablet, the iPad Air, and as you'd expect from Waterfield Designs, it's rugged and good-looking.</p><br /><p><strong>Specifications</strong> </p><br /><p>Dimensions: 10.5" wide x 8.7" high x 1.0" max thickness (26.7 x 22.0 x 2.54 cm) (bag comes in two sizes; one to fit a "naked" iPad Air, the other to fit an iPad Air with a 3rd-party slick case)</p><br /><p>Weight: 14.85 ounces (421 grams) with strap</p><br /><p>Material: The main part of the bag is made of a tan waxed canvas, while the top is made of premium leather. Inside is lined with cushioning neoprene. Brown nylon shoulder strap ($19 extra).</p><br /><p><strong>Design Highlights</strong> </p><br /><p>If Indiana Jones had an iPad Air and wanted to carry it, I think he'd own an Outback Solo. The waxed canvas and leather will age nicely, ensuring that the rugged style of the bag gains even more character over the years. The neoprene lining cushions your iPad Air from bumps and drops, while a magnetic closure on the leather top keeps the bag shut. If there's anything I'm not thrilled about, it's the lack of some "rough" material on the strap to keep it from sliding off a shoulder. The iPad Air is light enough that the Outback Solo doesn't need a shoulder pad, but I found that the bag wanted to slide off of my shoulder while walking. You <em>can</em> adjust the strap to carry it crossways on your body to prevent slipping, but some may find that carrying method not to their liking.</p><br /><p>I tested the Outback Solo with an iPad Air equipped with a Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover, and it fit beautifully into the bag. Seeing as these super sweet sacks woke up the curious middle schoolers within us, we had to learn more about the architecture/art history grad-turned-bag maker—click on the jump to read on.</p><br /><div readability='136.458909961' id='more'><br /><p><strong>So what's the story behind your label's name, Harper Ave?</strong><br/><br />"Well, when I returned to sunny LA from grad school in London I moved with a couple girlfriends into a place on Harper Ave in WeHo. I was in a bit of limbo, doing freelance design work, while both my roomies were starting these wonderful creative companies. Funny enough, I learned that when my father moved to LA and started his company, <strong>he also lived on Harper Ave.</strong> So when I started thinking about this whole backpack thing, it occurred to me that our street carries a bit of entrepreneurial luck. Appropriately, the street also happens to be densely populated with beautiful historic buildings."</p><br /><p><strong>Tell us about your background—what were you doing before you got into the backpack game?</strong><br/><br />"I grew up in a very creative household and ended up studying art and architecture history at UCSB, and then continued to study historical architecture in grad school. I was always torn between my love for history and my love for being creative, but there is very little you can do with a history degree, especially when you also have strong creative urges. All along the way I was also very passionate about cooking, and after working in a restaurant kitchen and for an interior designer, I was certain I would either open a restaurant or go into restaurant design. While I was thinking about that and doing random freelance work, the backpack idea kind came to me and led me in a path I never imagined."</p><br /><p><strong>That's a big jump! Was there a specific "a-ha" moment that inspired you to make the leap into designing bags?</strong><br/><br />"When I moved back to LA and was working freelance I found that I was all over the place. I would have to pack up my purse and a tote bag for the day, to hold my normal everyday stuff like makeup, my laptop, and sometimes an outfit change or heels [...] I felt super sloppy and scattered all the time, always was forgetting things, and then I starting thinking about how one nice big backpack would solve my problems.</p><br /><p>When I started looking for one I realized that they were either too casual [...] or too expensive and small and couldn't be man-handled through a hectic day. There was <strong>no happy medium</strong> that I could take to the gym, to meetings, out at night, while traveling, to the sandy wet beach, in the rain, or just as an everyday bag.</p><br /><p>The 'a-ha' moment then came when I realized that every time I imagined an ideal backpack I would think about it in terms and principles I learned in modern architecture classes: A polished and cleaned up design, practicality, form following function, eliminating superfluous ornament [...] And that was basically how I changed gears and entered the fashion accessory world, which I still know nothing about, but I think that when something is designed with guiding principles that make absolute sense, and it comes through in the product, that's pretty much all it takes."</p><br /><p><a class="zoom" href="http://la.racked.com/uploads/HarperAveMies_2013_12.jpg"><img alt="HarperAveMies_2013_12.jpg" height="553" src="http://la.racked.com/uploads/HarperAveMies_2013_12-thumb.jpg" width="500"/> </a><br/><br /><span class='credit'>The Mies backpack via Harper Ave</span> </p><br /><p><strong>Who (or what) are your design muses?</strong><br/><br />"I have many, but I think modern architecture and architects had the biggest impact on my designs. Take <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Mies_van_der_Rohe" id="readabilityLink-5" name="readabilityLink-5" style="color: inherit; text-decoration: none;">Mies</a><a class="readability-DoNotFootnote" href="#readabilityFootnoteLink-5" style="color: inherit;"><small>^[5] </small> </a> Van Der Rohe for example. He said things like, 'No design is possible until the materials with which you design are completely understood,' 'God is in the details,' and 'Less is more.' Applying those principles, I studied different materials carefully and learned that a synthetic patent leather would be most durable, excellent for wet weather, and look most polished, while natural leather would be comfiest against the skin, and have some nice stretch so it molds to your back a bit."</p><br /><p><strong>Did you find any challenges when you were researching fabrics and materials?</strong><br/><br />"It is completely unconventional to mix real and synthetic leathers in the same product, not to mention a logistical nightmare since they come from different suppliers and need different sewing techniques. But thinking about the qualities each material offered, I couldn't have it any other way and made it work."</p><br /><p><strong>Is there a specific work of architecture that inspires you most?</strong><br/><br />Mies Van der Rohe's iconic <a href="http://www.farnsworthhouse.org/" id="readabilityLink-6" name="readabilityLink-6" style="color: inherit; text-decoration: none;">Farnsworth House</a><a class="readability-DoNotFootnote" href="#readabilityFootnoteLink-6" style="color: inherit;"><small>^[6] </small> </a> is basically a glass box set between two white concrete planes, so it abstracts the boundary between the occupant and the beautiful forrest surroundings, and is a consummate expression of his dictum 'less is more.' This inspired the <a href="http://www.harperave.com/products/farnsworth" id="readabilityLink-7" name="readabilityLink-7" style="color: inherit; text-decoration: none;">Farnsworth</a><a class="readability-DoNotFootnote" href="#readabilityFootnoteLink-7" style="color: inherit;"><small>^[7] </small> </a> backpack, which has a white front panel and crystal clear PVC sides. Every backpack has a story like this and though most of the consumers who buy them in stores never know the story behind their specific backpack, the inspiration behind it made for a much better finished product."</p><br /><p><strong>What do you have planned in the future for Harper Ave?</strong><br/><br />"I am very careful about what I want to make next. I am not very good at knowing what will be trending, so I draw design inspiration from timeless modern architecture, and color inspiration from timeless art. I like the idea of accessories that are carefully designed to be both practical and polished, and am working on some new backpacks and cosmetic cases, and will hopefully branch out from there. I would rather take the process slowly and create thoughtful and carefully designed products than just expand because buyers are asking for more variety. "</p><br /><p><strong>Got any recent discoveries around town you'd like to share?</strong><br/><br />"I am in a Mexican food phase at the moment. Well, not any longer. These days the luggage department has a new, altogether less weighty look.</p><br /><p>“In recent years the request for classic luggage has shifted in favour of weekenders and carry-on bags. This is because of changing travel habits: today travellers need to move quickly, reaching far away places in the fastest and most convenient way,” says Marco Franchini, chief executive of Valextra luggage.</p><br /><p>Sasha Sorkin of Net-a-Porter says: “We’ve seen a big rise in sales of weekend bags. People are taking more short breaks, they’re travelling more for work and they don’t want big pieces. Plus, check-in weight limits have become so low you can barely take anything anyway. It’s much simpler to have a carry-on.”</p><br /><p>“Sales are up 28 per cent in the past three years,” says Stephen Spitz, chief executive of Case, which manages the luggage department at Harrods, where brands such as Tumi, Mulberry and Victorinox are sold. “People today are under enormous time pressure and often stay at quality hotels that offer a very quick turnaround for their laundry and dry cleaning.”</p><br /><p>So is this the death of luggage as we know it? “We still sell larger check-in cases, primarily for long haul,” says Katherine Green, brand manager at Globe-Trotter. “After our trolley cases, our next bestsellers are the 30in and 33in extra-deep suitcases with wheels, which are our two largest sizes.”</p><br /><div readability='33' class='fullstoryImage fullstoryImageRight inline'><span class='story-image'><img alt="Mulberry’s Albany Duffle" class="c1" src="http://im.ft-static.com/content/images/64929332-620b-11e3-916e-00144feabdc0.img"/> </span><br /><p class='caption c2'>Mulberry’s Albany Duffle, £795</p><br /></div><br /><p>Still, says Franchini, Valextra’s “classic rigid travel set, the Costa luggage, nowadays is purchased only by connoisseurs of travel” – and then most often in made-to-order materials such as alligator skin.</p><br /><p>As a result, brands everywhere have put a new emphasis on the weekend bag. “It has become another luxury purchase, like your handbag,” says Sorkin. Globe-Trotter, for example, beloved for its traditional hard fibreboard, leather-finished suitcases, has launched Jet, a new series of weekend bags inspired by the 1930s golden age of jet travel made from Windsor grain leather. There are flight bags, holdalls and co-ordinating passport holders (£45-£1,200).</p><br /><div readability='34' class='fullstoryImage fullstoryImageRight inline'><span class='story-image'><img alt="Valextra’s Soft Briefcase" class="c3" src="http://im.ft-static.com/content/images/6013c1b4-620b-11e3-916e-00144feabdc0.img"/> </span><br /><p class='caption c4'>Valextra’s Soft Briefcase, £2,290</p><br /></div><br /><p>Mark Cross, the American heritage luxury brand that has developed a loyal following for its women’s Villa America oversize tote, is set to launch a men’s travel collection for spring 2014. Even Louis Vuitton, the bastion of the suitcase, launched a new compact four-wheel overnight valise, the Zephyr (£2,120), earlier this year. At Net-a-Porter, Sorkin says Gucci monogrammed weekend bags are top sellers, alongside those by Anya Hindmarch. At Mr Porter, there’s a bevy of men’s weekend holdalls on view from brands such as Givenchy, Mulberry, Alfred Dunhill and Santiago González (son of Colombian handbag designer Nancy), who has produced a style in crocodile for autumn. “The average price people will pay has more than doubled – we had a Nancy González exotic weekend bag for £5,150 recently,” says Sorkin. “Elsewhere, pieces cost from £700 into the thousands.”</p><br /><div readability='34' class='fullstoryImage fullstoryImageRight inline'><span class='story-image'><img alt="Anya Hindmarch’s Bespoke Weekend Latimer" class="c3" src="http://im.ft-static.com/content/images/5b92158c-620b-11e3-916e-00144feabdc0.img"/> </span><br /><p class='caption c4'>Anya Hindmarch’s Bespoke Weekend Latimer, £1,600</p><br /></div><br /><p>Meanwhile, some new luxury groups have stepped on to the luggage scene. Fischer Voyage was launched this year by Steven Fischer, a former luxury industry analyst at Northwestern University, Illinois, with a single piece: the Prairie, priced at £8,250 and handmade in the American Midwest by artisan saddle and harness makers. Each individually numbered bag is made from a single side of leather from Horween Tannery, the last remaining tannery in Chicago. The handle is hand-stitched and the leather edges are burnished by hand. “I was inspired by a 100-year-old Gladstone travel bag handed down by my grandfather,” says Fischer. “It’s an heirloom, designed to be used by generation after generation.”</p><br /><div readability='34' class='fullstoryImage fullstoryImageRight inline'><span class='story-image'><img alt="Fisher Voyage’s Prairie" class="c3" src="http://im.ft-static.com/content/images/5ddbc996-620b-11e3-916e-00144feabdc0.img"/> </span><br /><p class='caption c4'>Fisher Voyage’s Prairie, £8,250</p><br /></div><br /><p>Fischer is following in the footsteps of British luggage brand Moncrief, created by Caroline Evans and Jigsaw founder John Robinson and specialising in handmade carry-on luggage and travel accessories. For £2,000, travellers can pick up a perforated calf leather weekend bag in rainbow colours (or trade up to calf hair), complete with a proprietary cashmere blanket “to make your journeys more comfortable”. The brand also makes bigger carry-on trolley suitcases with co-ordinating detachable wallets (£4,950) – all featuring treated linings designed to be fray- and stain-resistant.</p><br /><p>Harrods’ Spitz says that, rather than the end of luggage, we should see this as the beginning of a new golden age. “People are compartmentalising their travel and types of suitcases,” he says. “They have different travel luggage pieces, sets or bags for the different types of travel they are undertaking.” It’s not an either-or situation, in other words, it’s a plus one.
