For Christmas, rapper and design scholar Kanye West commissioned artist George Condo to paint a Birkin handbag for his beloved fiancé, Kim Kardashian, who obligingly posted a pic of the über-designer leather bag on Instagram. Condo, you may recall, has previously painted works for West, to accompany the songs “Cold,” “Power,” and “Runaway,” and the record “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” and his bag painting is very similar to one of the “Twisted Fantasy” covers and a painting he made in response to former New York governor Eliot Spitzer’s sex scandal. Instagram commenters, however, were less receptive to the painting’s lineage. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
User @caolive, an apparent Hermes devotee, wrote: “He destroyed the Hermes bag, which alone is a work of art. How embarrassing!!” Likewise unimpressed was @rizkhanhussein, who quipped: “Reminds her of her sex tape.”
Their disgust was summed up by Instagrammer @princessdiva_219, who joked: “Wtf is that. Im sorry but thats the uglieat bag ive ever seen in my life. Ive seen some ugly bags butt that 1 tops the cake. Dont ever wear that outside lol.”
Unfortunately for @princessdiva_219, the cat is already out of the Birkin bag on her last point: West and Kardashian were spotted shopping on Thursday, with the much-maligned tote in tow[7] .
