SYRACUSE, N.Y. - An expanding leather goods manufacturer is setting up shop in Armory Square.

Lombardi Leather[1] got its start in Skaneateles and will continue to maintain a design studio there, said Francis Lombardi, the company's founder. But the business plans to relocate all of its production to the downtown location within a month.

Lombardi will also sell prototypes and blemished products at the new site, located in the Bentley-Settle Building. That's right across the street from The Blue Tusk on Walton Street.

The company's first-run items are already available in Armory Square at Designer Warehouse, Lombardi said. They're also available at Skaneateles 300 and online.

Lombardi's main product is a buckle-less belt, which attracted attention over the summer on the crowd funding website Kickstarter. The company ran a campaign hoping to raise $16,000, which it did in just six days. The campaign wound up raising a total of more than $51,000.

The firm is now getting ready to roll out a new line of shoes, belts and bags made with leather from American bison.

Lombardi is the former CEO and founder of Fralo Plastech Manufacturing of Salina. Fralo manufactured plastic tanks for onsite waste treatment systems.

Founded in 2002, the Fralo Plastech grew to $10.5 million in sales and 32 employees. Lombardi sold the business to Roth Global Plastics in 2007.

Lombardi started his leather business at his home in Skaneateles. It began as a hobby.
