Secaucus-based Royce Leather, which started as a small upstart in the Flatiron District in 1974, has blossomed into a global, but still family-run. leather brand.
Royce Leather was founded by Harold Bauer, son of revered Austrian leather craftsman Eugene, and his wife Kathy. The company started as a simply assembly line, showroom and distribution center in New York. Today, they use eCommerce and overseas manufacturing to reach customers all over the world. In August, they were included on the Inc. 500/5,000 list as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the country.
Billy Bauer, son of Kathy and Harold, says small batch production and an emphasis on high quality and functionality have made Royce bags, briefcases and other accessories stand out.
“What distinguishes Royce is its plethora of vibrant colored leathers, ranging from key lime green to purple, which is something very few leather manufacturers are able to successfully accomplish,” said Billy Bauer, adding that their products are made with American leather and manufactured in Colombia and Hong Kong.
They also offer RFID-blocking passport cases and wallets; their classic bi-fold with identity theft-blocking technology also has a Bluetooth tracking device.
“We are not selling leather — we are providing an experience,” he said. “We are honored to be among (Inc.’s recognized companies), but revenue growth alone is not enough ... client satisfaction, employee fulfillment, profitability and other essential elements are not accounted for in their equation.”
Their next goals for growth, Billy Bauer said, includes building strong distribution partnerships with the myriad catalogs, department stores and gift and luggage websites. Online sales are big, he said, crediting his mother for successfully beefing up their eCommerce platform.
“Our growth singlehandedly stems from her transformation of our business model this past decade, establishing a seamless vendor to consumer drop ship program (and) her incredible leadership and executive vision,” he said.
