Fall will be full of color and layers and drama. Taking a break from our local highlights, we keep an eye on the runways and the Northern street looks. This style research helps prepare us for our fall hit list, and we already have a short list of items that are essential for fall style.
In every shot from the runways, both ready to wear and couture, we love to examine the crowd. While Fashion Week is focused on spring, we can see fall emerging in the best dressed bloggers, style icons and fashion hounds as they go by. From these looks, we selected the best dressed and created the ultimate shopping wish list.
Fabulous bag
Each look we loved was purposefully paired with a glorious handbag. The colors either matched the strongest color tone of the outfit or stood on its own. We did not see bags that simply matched the shoes and faded into the background, we saw bags that were for form and function. Messenger bags with cross-body straps complemented a sweater, handled bags dangling at the elbow of a bright buttoned coat. None of these bags were straw totes from summer ladies, and almost all were leather. So add a new fall bag to your holiday wish list.
Fabulous shoes
Runway shoes were the highest of heels with elegant straps, but on-looker shoes showed us a trend we could wear daily. Shoe-boots crafted with cut-outs were the most prevalent. These create a stronger statement than a simple pair of pumps, which tend to fade in a lady-like way into a look. Dramatic cut-out designs draw the eye, which is the intention. Favorite looks featured pairing a short skirt, tights with black leather cut in strong repeated patterns, often with an open toe. Black leather was more prevalent than brown, but we also saw colored leathers that were just as delightful. Please add serious shoes to your list!
Sweaters
Fall to winter in our local area has the favorable habit of falling to one lower set of temperatures. We never get snow-drifts so we can often either grab a coat or add a heavy sweater and scarf and find we are good for the day. This season’s sweaters are showing with heavy knit elements. This is not the season of the simple and smooth cashmere sweater. This is the season of the fisherman’s sweater, heavy with texture. Fabulous weaves that play with the angled shapes as they fall to your waist are starting to emerge. These are a creative mix of the asymmetric tops and dresses of summer.
Coat
The look that we saw most often, was finished off by a fabulous coat. Short, high-waisted shorts with tights, a mini skirt or pantaloons parade past. Striding by in their patterned and strappy shoes, they all wore winter coats. These coats were open and flowing, due to the light weather, but selected to add color and structure to the whole look. Each designer back was layered over the arm, or strapped across the sumptuous sweater. Look for yourself and then audit your winter coats of seasons past to see if they stand up to the strong statements of the season to come.
