SALEM — Police say a woman’s purse was stolen from her vehicle in a parking lot on Jefferson Avenue as she stood right outside it having a cigarette on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the lot at 10 Jefferson Ave., where the woman had pulled in shortly before 5 p.m. to have the cigarette, according to the incident log.

“She stepped out of her car and was standing on the driver’s side smoking and playing a game on her cellphone,” wrote police. “When she re-entered the car about 10 minutes later, she noticed her purse was missing and the passenger door did not appear to be latched completely.”

The woman told police that whoever had grabbed the item ignored her keys and wallet, which had been sitting right next to it.

The woman said she didn’t hear or see anything, or notice anyone in the area when she arrived.

“There do not appear to be any security cameras aimed at that location,” police wrote. “A check of the area for the bag and suspect turned up negative.”

The purse was described as a large, brown leather Rosetta. It reportedly contained a checkbook, reading glasses, an iPod Nano, five flash drives, a Sony underwater music player, sunglasses and a Social Security card.

Police advised the woman to contact her bank about the checkbook and to monitor her credit report over the coming months.

The woman said that she had just come from a hospital and she planned to contact security there in case she’d actually left the purse behind.
