To our surprise, there was no line outside of 76 Mercer Street[1] at 10am this morning, when the Proenza Schouler sample sale opened to the public. Inside, the crowd was sparse and relatively calm, which could be due to the fact that there are sadly no bags[2] (save for one evening bag in orange python, $368) and the merchandise is still pretty pricey.

As far as the shoe selection goes, there were a few woven chunky heels in brown and black for $506 in sizes 36, 38, and 40. We spotted a few tall booties priced at $389 in sizes 38, 37, and 39, as well as three or four Cianki booties for $620 in sizes 39 and 40. The selection is meager for size 37s, and nonexistent for anything below.

In the ready-to-wear department, there's a lot of tweed, python, and plastic patchwork to go around. The crowd seemed the most excited over the tweed crewneck coats, available in a cropped cut for $585 and a longer version for $735, in sizes 2, 6, and 8. There are a lot of "plastic leather" jackets from the spring 2013 collection in white for $1,650 and red for $1,425. If interested, there's one python vest in a size 0 for a whopping $2,355 .

Shirt jackets in tweed and chiffon are $555 and available in sizes 0 through 10 and in navy and orange. Chiffon silk tops range from $179 to $479 depending on the print. Noteworthy items include the chiffon crepe black trousers ($248), and we spotted a bunch of sizes 6's; the patchwork denim skirt ($89) and jacket ($149); and the bins of indigo denim ($89) in sizes 24 through 28.

All in all, the sale isn't a cheap one, but it's worth checking out if you're willing to splurge a bit. It's one day only, and ends tonight at 6pm. Photos weren't allowed inside, so check out the gallery above for an idea of what to expect.—Esther Levy-Chehebar
