Driver hit, robbed
AKRON: Akron police are searching for two men suspected in the assault and robbery Sunday night of a pizza delivery driver.
According to a police report, a driver for the Papa John’s store on East Waterloo Road was making a delivery about 10 p.m.
As he drove up to a house in the 600 block of East Archwood Avenue, two men were standing in the driveway.
The driver got out of his car and asked the men if they ordered pizza.
One responded yes and wanted to know if the driver could take a credit card.
As the driver was trying to call the store, the second man punched him in the face, knocking the driver to the ground.
The men took the food and fled.
Police describe the assailants as two black men.
The first was about 6 feet tall, weighing 205 to 215 pounds. He wore a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and red and white Nike shoes.
The second man was 18 to 22 years old, about 5 feet tall and weighing 105 pounds. He wore a black leather coat, brown shoes and black pants.
Cash stolen
AKRON: A man and woman were robbed of cash and jewelry Saturday evening after returning to their residence.
Akron police said the robber remains at large.
According to a police report, the couple saw a man standing on their front porch as they approached their Berwin Street home about 7:30 p.m.
When they stopped, he came to the driver’s side of the car, opened the door and struck the man in the head with a gun.
He stole a bag containing $25 and a ring and necklace belonging to the female passenger before fleeing into the neighborhood.
The driver was treated at Summa St. Thomas Hospital for a cut on his forehead.
Officers said they recovered the jewelry in the backyard.
The victims were able to provide only a minimal description to police.
They said the man was white, stood about 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet tall, and had a thin build. He wore all dark clothing.

Suspect detained
AKRON: An Akron man whom police said was held at gunpoint until officers arrived to make an arrest has been charged with burglary.
Monte T. Harris, 24, of Bettie Street, was booked into the Summit County Jail. He is scheduled for an initial appearance today in Akron Municipal Court.
Police said two residents were awakened about 3 a.m. Sunday when a man climbed through the kitchen window of their Akron home.
The male resident then fired a shot at the man inside the house.
The man ran down into the basement, where the resident held him at gunpoint until Akron police responded.
According to Summit County court records, Harris has a lengthy police record, with charges of assault, theft, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest stemming from incidents since 2008.
Car hits crowd
AKRON: An Akron woman faces a string of charges after police say she drove her car through a crowd Saturday morning.
Authorities say they were called to a report of a large fight between a group of females at 5:30 a.m. at Cole Avenue and Hammel Street.
Officers say five females complained that Roamonaye M. Carr, 18, of Talbot Avenue intentionally struck them with the car she was driving.
One of the victims was Carr’s sister.
Three of the women were taken to Akron-area hospitals for treatment for undisclosed injuries. Two others were treated at the scene.
Carr was apprehended at Sixth and Talbot avenues.
She is charged with five counts of felonious assault and one count of driving without a license.
Deaths investigated
AKRON: Akron police along with the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the deaths of two women over the weekend.
The body of the first victim, a 24-year-old, was found Saturday afternoon in a field on 26th Street Southwest in the city’s Kenmore neighborhood.
The second victim, a 37-year-old, was found unconscious Sunday evening on Pauline Avenue on the far east side of the city in the Ellet area. She was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital, where she later died.
Authorities say both women had a history of drug abuse and the deaths appear to be drug related.

BATH TOWNSHIP
Federal theft charge
CLEVELAND: A Bath Township man has been charged in a federal indictment with theft of government property, destruction of government property and making false statements to investigators, authorities said Monday.
Okey Wise, 64, allegedly committed the offenses some time in April while working as a supervisor at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
He was arrested Friday, authorities said.
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Cleveland said the three-count indictment charges Wise with using his position to steal raw materials from the local VA Medical Center, including wiring and other mechanisms necessary for the center’s backup generator to function.
The indictment also charges Wise with lying to federal officials who were investigating the incident.
CUYAHOGA VALLEY
Trail reopens
The National Park Service on Monday reopened closed sections of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
The decision affected the trail from Peninsula north to Independence.
Parts of the trail were closed Saturday and Sunday because of rains and high water levels on the Cuyahoga River.
MEDINA COUNTY
Storm damage
MEDINA: Medina County Auditor Mike Kovack is reminding property owners that they may claim a reduction in taxable real property value due to damaged or destroyed buildings in the wake of severe storms.
The benefit may even apply to basement flooding and other incidents not covered by insurance.
To receive the benefit, property owners must file a “Destruction of Property” form with the auditor. The form is available online at www.medinacountyauditor.org[1] under “Forms.”
The office will also mail the form out to you if necessary.
For property damaged in the recent storm, owners can have up to 25 percent of the value reduced off their property tax bill.
The form needs to be filed no later than Jan. 31.
STARK COUNTY
Capital improvements
CANTON: Stark County commissioners have set aside $3.3 million for repairs, renovations and moving expenses they expect to incur in 2014.
On Monday, they appropriated $1.8 million to replace the roof at the Stark County Jail. A final cost estimate is expected from the project architect when weather conditions permit an inspection.
Commissioners are planning to spend $900,000 to remodel the Cohen-Joliet building at 3525 Regent Ave. NE for the county Board of Elections and move the office from 201 Third St. NE.
Another $600,000 has been set aside to repair the parking garage at the County Office Building.

‘First Walk’ set
AKRON: Summit County Council member Tim Crawford will lead the third annual “First Walk” on Jan. 1 on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
Walkers should meet at 10 a.m. at the Manchester Trailhead, 2740 Manchester Road in southwest Akron.
Hot chocolate will be served.
