Jason Wu[1] offered yet another relaxed collection for Pre-Fall 2014[2] , with new ideas for sweater dressing; flowing, bias-cut dresses adorned with ruffles; and a decidedly fall palette of black, moss green and rich brown. Here, my favorite things about what I saw.

Three new ways to style an oversized sweater.

There’s few things more relaxing or versatile than an oversized sweater, and for Pre-Fall 2014, Wu offered plenty of ideas for styling them. In one look (see top, left), he paired a V-neck sweater, scrunched casually at the elbows and worn long over the hips, with a lightweight, mixed floral print skirt. In another (top right), he took a ribbed, moss green sweater, again scrunched at the elbows, and tucked it partially into a moto-style leather pencil skirt: a look both effortless and polished. Perhaps the most ingenious was the final look in the collection (top center), which paired a black ribbed sweater over a semi-transparent, delicately beaded, ankle-skimming skirt, making us wonder if one doesn’t need to be uncomfortably dressed for formal occasions after all.

A relaxed take on the moto jacket.

My favorite piece in the collection was, without a doubt, Wu’s black leather moto jacket/sweater hybrid. Unlike your typical moto jacket, this one didn’t look tough and vaguely uncomfortable, but rather relaxed and cozy. The leather was soft and supple, belted loosely at the waist, with a knit shawl collar and knit sleeves. It’s the kind of piece you know you’d wear every single day of fall.

Equally inventive was a luxe take on the tracksuit, this one silk with a knit deep V collar, waistband and wrists, and — get this — filled with down. It doesn’t get any more relaxed than this.

The accessories.

While the clothes themselves were relaxed and softly contoured, the accessories were anything but, with hard, pointed edges and (in the case of the shoes) sharp stilettos and tight ankle straps. Most covetable were the boots, heels and bags[3] covered in the midnight floral print seen in the top left skirt, which we expect will be top sellers when they hit stores.
