Hundreds of shoppers braved the early morning chill to grab a Boxing Day bargain in Dundee.

About 400 people queued outside Next at the Gallagher Retail Park in preparation for the store’s opening at 6am.

Several shoppers had arrived closer to 4am in order to nab first place in the sales queue.

Michelle Towns, 33, a barber from Fintry, and her friend Elaine Carnegie, 35, a leisure attendant from Carnoustie. were second in the queue.

“We got here at about 20 past four,” Michelle said.

“I’ve got a little girl and Elaine has two sets of twins so we want to get clothes for them.

“I was here first last year but this year I just missed out and was second in line.”

Elaine added: “Everything is half price or less, so I buy the children’s clothes for the year. It saves me a fortune.”

Lori Malone, 22, a full-time mum from Fintry, said she also came to the sale to stock up on children’s clothes.

“We were here just after five,” she said.

“It is a big shopping day for us, after this we will head into the town.”

When the doors opened at 6am, shoppers streamed into the East Dock Street store. People were seen filling bag after bag with shoes, jumpers, and children’s clothes and happy shoppers began exiting the store laden with purchases by about 6.20am.

The crowds were so big the store had to close its doors again briefly as it had become too full, with a fresh queue building up outside.

Sonia Campbell, 32, a mental health nurse from Fintry, and Sharon Campbell, 51, a homemaker, also from Fintry, left the store with several bulging bags between them.

“We are here because we just wanted to get some bargains for ourselves,” Sonia said.

“We are going to go to the other Next store now and get some things for the home.

“I bought a beautiful leather jacket which I am very happy with.”

Lisa Burns, 32, from Ceres, and her friend Lee-Anne Connor had also arrived at the store at 4.20am.

“It is a bit insane in there,” Lisa said, as she left the store laden with bags.

“I have been stocking up on kids’ clothes for the year but I also snuck in a coat for myself.

“We only had three hours’ sleep before getting up to come here. It’s good fun but it does get crazy.”
