Hosting or invited to a Christmas or New Year[1] party? Follow the tips on how to dress for the night and end the year in style.

WHAT TO WEAR

For Him

Suits: The classic James Bond-style tux looks best at a formal party[2] or dinner[3] . It could be in black, charcoal grey or navy blue. Look out for short slim lapels, single - or two-button jackets[4] and straight or slim-fit trousers. Go for black, white or grey pintuck shirts with short collars[5] and sport a bow instead of a tie. A slim belt with narrow and round tip glossy laced shoes should complete your look.

Jackets and Trousers: For a more relaxed event, you could wear a short, stand-alone (plain or printed) two button semi-formal jacket over a 'V' or 'round' neck, plain full sleeve top and straight trousers[6] or pants. Contrast the colour palette - grey with black or tan with brown. For a striking entry, wear a bright jacket - red, orange or blue. Accessorize with a pair of semi-formal velvet or suede moccasins or loafers[7] .

Jackets and Jeans: For a night around town, slip into a multi-zippered, fitted and short, casual biker-inspired jacket. The more the zips your jacket has, the better. Dress your jacket with snug fit or second skin jeans[8] , a broad leather belt and laced ankle-length shoes or boots.

For Her

The one piece: For a glamorous red carpet look, go for a long dress (plain, sequin or embellished) or gown in black, white or red with either a low back or a deep neckline. Break your look with a contrasting coloured clutch bag; dangling diamond or crystal earrings, a long multi-layered chain or a jewelled watch. Better still, wear red or black pencil heel stilettos.

Trousers and Jackets: You will look just as striking if you sport a more urban and chic look - straight and slim high-waist trousers, a high neck full-sleeve top or blouse, layered with a long multi button jacket or short overcoat on top. Restrict to black, grey or chocolate brown. Leave the jacket open[9] and ensure it ends just above the knee. You may want to wear heels or high boots for this look.

The Mini: Go for a body hugging short (knee-length) and stretchable dress with 'off' shoulders or short sleeves. A pair of coloured tights or a soft cashmere shawl can create a strong colour contrast. Wear just one strong, eye-catching and conversation-making accessory.

THE RULES OF THE GAME

Dress warm

There's no point in staying both cold and uneasy just to look good. Ensure your clothes protect you from the chill and wind (especially if you are outdoors).

Try something new

Experiment with an offbeat or unconventional look, provided it is easy to carry and practical. Look drastically different from your office look.

Plan ahead

Plan your wardrobe[10] (clothes and accessories) in advance and ensure you have things dry cleaned, ironed, steamed, polished or repaired and altered as necessary.
