Yesterday at the J.Crew sample sale—with no markdowns in sight—women were still lining up to get into location at 260 Fifth Avenue after work hours. It took us about 15 minutes to get inside the venue, which was a little bit crowded but comfortable enough to shop. Although some sections have already been picked through (such as leather bags, scarves, and some accessories), there's still plenty to be had in the clothing department.
Despite the staff's effort to keep the sale orderly, pieces were on different racks where they don't belong and so you really need to walk through each aisle to make sure you don't miss anything.
We found some decent pieces from the J. Crew Collection at steeper prices, such as lace skirts going for $125-150 and wool dresses for $175. We found some dresses from this past summer's bridesmaids collection such as the Louisa dress[1] in silk chiffon for $60. They came in different colors, but were mostly in larger sizes and some were badly damaged. However, you can currently find smaller sizes online for $129.99 with an additional 30% discount.
The selection of cashmere sweaters was still getting a lot of attention, with most of them going for $90.
We spotted some cute shoes, but found some are actually cheaper online—like these plaid lodge moccasins[2] , which are $65 at the sale but retail for $59.99 online and currently $49.50 plus an extra 30% off. Like most of the brand's sample sales, shoppers are often able to find the same items at cheaper prices in-stores, online, or at the outlets. Other shoes we still spotted are the Kiki ballet flat[3] for $65, currently online for $70.
More affordable pieces can be found in the Madewell sections. Here, there are numerous cotton sweaters for $25-$35. Across from the Madewell stock, there are also bins of accessories, including a bin full of belts, hats and beanies, a couple of bins with $20 square scarves, another with $45 leather crossbody satchels in camel and red, and finally, a bin with less than desirable tech stuff, such as iPhone 4/4S cases for $10 or small tablet sleeves going for $20.
The children's section has become a makeshift dressing room for some ladies, but it's still full of really cute knits, pants, dresses, and sweaters. However, prices aren't so great for the teeny sizes—small puffer jackets are $50 and sweaters are $30, which may not be considered a good deal on childrenswear for some people.
See photo gallery for more of the offerings with pricing included. A staffer told us the markdowns will likely happen near the end of sale, which ends this Sunday. See the dealfeed below for more info.—Hsini
