She is a former child star, but Dakota Fanning has more than proved that she has grown into a stylish and chic young lady.

The 19-year-old got in touch with her urban sense of style as she stepped out in Soho, New York on Monday wearing a black aviator jacket, skinny dark khaki leather pants and a green plaid button-down shirt.

She rounded off the double dose of leather outfit with black platform suede ankle boots, a black leather bag and sunglasses.

As she walked down the street, she talked on the phone while holding an orange drink.

She was either very cold or involved in a heated conversation because the actress made a sour face.

The young star has spent the last few months shooting a new film on Philadelphia's Delaware river, alongside co-star Richard Gere.

In the new project called Franny, Dakota plays one half of a young newlywed couple who are befriended by a hedonistic philanthropist (Gere) who meddles in their relationship in an attempt to relive his past.

Gere has been seen on set sporting an array of flamboyant outfits, including one brightly-coloured get-up in which he bore an uncanny resemblance to the Scottish comedian Billy Connolly.

Meanwhile, the busy actress currently has three projects in various stages of production.

She is due to grace our screens as Effie Gray in the film of the same name, however both the Cannes and US screenings were cancelled under mysterious circumstances.

The period flick, which was written by actress Emma Thompson, seems to have stalled due to legal woes.

Thompson's script has been the subject of a fierce legal battle, with American writer Gregory Murphy alleging that Thompson drew inspiration from his first play, The Countess, which had a brief run in London’s West End in 2005.

Although a New York judge declared the script was ‘not substantially similar’ to Murphy’s work, it is not yet clear when Dakota's eagerly awaited turn will see the light of day.
