A BURGLAR who was filmed stealing a handbag from a house in Leeds has been jailed for 10 months.
Gabriela Bihariova was spotted by a quick-thinking neighbour who used a mobile phone to record her carrying out the offence.
Leeds Crown Court heard Bihariova carried out the burglary at the house on Harehills Lane, Harehills, on the afternoon of August 26 this year.
Bihariova was seen acting suspiciously in the street and the resident went outside to see what was happening.
The neighbour then noticed the door to a house nearby was open.
David Lampitt, prosecuting, said: “She thought it was suspicious and, using her mobile phone began to film the front door. Within a short time the defendant walked out with a black leather handbag. She looked sheepish and walked off.”
Soon after the incident the owner of the property was made aware and realised she had been burgled. Credit cards and £200 in cash was also taken from the house. The mobile phone clip was given to the police and an officer recognised her.
Bihariova, of Dorset Road, Harehills, was arrested ten days later and pleaded guilty to burglary. The court heard she has previous convictions, mainly for shoplifting, dating back to 2005.
At the time of the burglary she was subject to a four-month suspended prison sentence for theft.
Natalie Banks, mitigating, said Bihariova’s offending was linked to her addiction to heroin and could not recall carrying out the burglary. Miss Banks said Bihariova was taking steps to tackle her addiction and had the support of her family.
Jailing Bihariova, judge Sally Cahill QC, said: “You are a young woman who I have no doubt at all is somebody who has substantial problems with drugs.”
