As crowds packed Ratio 3 in the Mission District to see the latest from photographer wunderkind Ryan McGinley[1] , one of his subjects, Brandee Brown[2] , shimmied past to take a selfie in front of her portrait.

For his "Yearbook" show, McGinley, who at 25 in 2003 was among the youngest to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum[3] in New York, had plastered the gallery walls with portraits of beautiful nude young people - and many were in town for the show, staying together in a large Airbnb house[4] nearby.

"It's like a reality TV show in that house," said Sandy Kim[5] , who pointed out her portrait. She said the energy at the party, which spilled down the streets, was surprising.

"A couple years ago, there was a photo scene in the city for sure, but it's just gotten way bigger. All the New York people, my L.A. friends, all are converging here right now."

Gallery owner Chris Perez[6] had orchestrated McGinley's Whitney show. As the band Holy S- played in the middle of the gallery, attendees drank Tecate beer in brown bags from the Mexican restaurant next door.

Celebrated Magnum photographer Jim Goldberg[7] was there with his daughter. "San Francisco's always been one of the major centers for photography, and now with the MOMA[8] closed, you can see smaller galleries are just packed," he said, referring to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art[9] 's closure for renovations.

The 35-year-old McGinley, who recently shot Katy Perry[10] for her album cover, wore a leather jacket he'd decorated himself - painted maroon, studded and glued with a felt cutout of a cat he called Dr. Strange Cuts.

Anna Acquistapace[11] , who runs the nonprofit incubator Zoo Labs, said she's seeing a cohesive gallery scene emerge: "Everyone from last night is here tonight - you start to recognize people."

Hours past when the show was supposed to end, people were still pushing in to see the art.

"My boobs look crazy in that one," one young woman commented.
