Handbags are the latest offering from Illesteva, the accessories brand that first drew a celebrity following with eyewear in 2009 and has since added umbrellas and collaborations with the likes of Zac Posen and Dasha Zhukova to its repertory. Alina Silberman, who founded the line along with her brother Daniel Silberman and their friend Justin Salguero, came up with the idea. “It wasn’t planned, to be honest,” she said. “I just really wanted to do it. I thought it was too expensive, what was out there, and I thought we could do it better.” The collection, which includes chic clutches and round purses, isn’t just for women. Daniel said he has been traveling the past month with the backpack, one of the four designs that are available at illesteva.com[2] , some of which will be for sale at Barneys New York early next month. Since the team often flies between New York, where the boys live, and Germany, Italy and France, where their glasses are manufactured, travel was a big inspiration for the project.
In addition to utility, the bags — priced from about $1,000 to $2,000 — offer the kinds of quality now expected of the brand, like being handmade in small, family-owned factories in Germany, where Alina lives. Comprised of handpicked leathers, Indonesian python skins and Italian metal fittings, the accessories take several hours each to make. “We want them to last forever,” she said. Illesteva will show its second collection of handbags in Paris later this year.
