U.S. Customs & Border Protection officials recently thwarted shipments carrying more than $210 million worth of fake Hermes designer bags from entering the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, officials announced Thursday.
Authorities intercepted nine shipments from China filled with 16,053 counterfeit Hermes handbags from June 6 through Sept. 17 destined to Greater Los Angeles and Texas.
“Two had the knock-offs hidden in the nose of the containers with concealing attempts of packing legitimate, non-infringing merchandise behind them,” according to a statement.
The shipments - sent by five different importers - had a domestic value of $295,665 and had a manufacturer suggested retail price of more than $210 million.
Nationally, handbags and wallets make up the largest number of counterfeit items seized by Customs in 2012. Of the estimated $511 million in handbags and wallets seized, more than $446 million originated from China, according to Customs.
