Police are warning people of the dangers of taking medication that has not been prescribed to them after a handbag was stolen from a car in Northumberland.

Thieves stole a black leather handbag between 11.45pm on Saturday, November 23, and 12.30pm on Sunday, November 24, from the footwell of an unlocked car parked on First Avenue in Morpeth.

The handbag contained prescribed drugs – Citalopram and Dihydrocodeine – which should not be taken by anyone they have not been prescribed to.

Anyone who finds them should hand them in to the nearest police station.

Police are issuing the warning as the medication will cause serious side effects and could potentially be life threatening if taken when they have not been prescribed.

Officers are carrying out enquiries into the theft and urging anyone who has any information or who finds the medication to contact them immediately.

Police are appealing for anyone who with information about the theft to contact police quoting log number 688 of 24/11/13.

Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
