LEE -- Thieves -- likely part of a multi-state crime wave -- stole an estimated $500,000 worth of leather goods from a high-end outlet store over the weekend, local authorities said on Tuesday.
According to the Lee Police Department, three masked men wearing gloves broke into the Michael Korrs store on Saturday between 4:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. and began placing a large amount of leather handbags, purses and wallets into numerous garbage bags. The store's security cameras showed the men gathering an assortment of watches and placing them into several backpacks before leaving through the rear door.
The thieves disabled the store alarm then entered the store by breaking off the lock and forcing their way in, according to the investigating officers.
Police say the store manager discovered the break-in and theft around 8:30 and told investigating officers that approximately $500,000 in merchandise was taken.
Further investigation determined similar incidents involving three masked men recently occurred at outlet stores in Maine, Connecticut, New York and Maryland.
Lee police say they are following several leads, working with the state police and several other law enforcement agencies to gather additional evidence in an effort to catch the thieves.
