A ‘callous’ burglar posing as an odd-job man stole an elderly woman’s handbag from her Morecambe home.
He knocked on the door of a house on Carleton Street at around 12.15pm on Monday, November 4, Lancashire Police said.
He asked the occupants, an elderly couple, if they needed any work doing and was allowed entry inside where, after chatting to them, he stole the dark blue, leather handbag from the dining room and left.
The bag, with a damaged strap, contained shopping money, a mobile phone and bank cards.
The man was described as white, tanned, 6ft, heavily built, aged 50 to 55, with dark hair, possibly with a moustache, who spoke with a foreign accent.
He was said to be wearing a three-quarter length dark brown leather jacket.
Detective Sergeant Fiona Jackson, of Morecambe CID, said: “I would appeal to anyone who has seen a man matching this description in the area, or other people who may have also been cold-called by this man, or anyone who thinks they may know the offender to contact police.
“This is a callous crime against a couple aged in their 80s in their own home.
“I would reassure people that an investigation is under way but we would welcome any information from the public.”
Call police on 101 with information or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
