WHAT would you spend $1300 on? You could pay a month's rent, stock up on groceries and shout your mates a nice dinner. Or you could blow it all on this ridiculous cardigan.

The blue cardigan with black stars from Saint Laurent's Fall Winter 2013 collection is apparently one of the season's must have items. We have no idea why. It's been styled on several celebrities in fashion magazines, including Zooey Deschanel and Amanda Seyfried, and Katie Holmes was snapped on the street sporting the baby blue knit, reports The New York Post[1] .

It's made from a combination of wool, mohair and polyamide. You can buy it from US luxury department stores Saks and Barneys, as well as e-tailers Farfetch.com and MyTheresa.com for a cool $1,290.

So why is it so expensive? The legendary French fashion house has always been associated with luxury (remember the famous YSL smoking suit?), but this just looks like something you'd grab for $5 from Vinnies.

French Designer Hedi Slimane was brought on to revamp the house with a distinctive youthful vibe, which was reflected in the 90s grunge theme of his latest collections.

Fashion writer Tim Blanks (of style.com[2] ) called the fall collection a "random mash-up of sloppy cardigans, plaid shirts, and sparkly dresses accessorised with ironic strings of pearls and black bows, fishnets and biker boots."

Ok, we get it. You're paying for the brand and for the quality of the piece. You might pay that much for an amazing leather handbag or a great wool coat that will last you a lifetime. But an oversized cardigan that will go straight out of fashion by the time the next season rolls around? No. Just no.
