IF YOU have any spare handbags gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe, why not give them to a very deserving cause?
Handbags for Hospices calls upon the public to donate their unwanted handbags to go under the hammer to raise funds for hospices – and to help host sale events too.
In June, Handbags for Hospices’ sale of high-profile handbags – including signed bags from Kim Wilde and Elizabeth Hurley – at Lavant House School raised £2,500 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Chichester and Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice near Arundel.
More than £1.4m is spent each day on hospice care throughout the UK, with only an average of 34 per cent of this vital funding coming from the government.
This Hospice Care Week (October 7-13) readers can help to raise funds for hospices with something that you have lots of – handbags!
“We all like an excuse to get together with the girls,” Handbags for Hospices founder Abigail Bowen says. “So why not arrange an evening in your home, or a corner of the local pub or cafe?
“Get your friends to bring along their unwanted handbags (everyone has at least one, stuffed at the back of a wardrobe) and bid on each other bags for charity. You’ll be surprised at how all of those tenners can add up.”

There is a donation bin in the Chichester Observer’s reception at Unicorn House, Eastgate Square, Chichester, where you can drop off bags for sale for the organisation – which is gearing up for its first London event on Thursday, October 3.
