WETUMPKA, Alabama — Federal agents swarmed an Alabama flea market Saturday and seized what they determined were counterfeit consumer goods, from clothing to electronics, from dozens of vendors.
About 100 agents from Homeland Security Investigations, a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement[1] , confiscated products being sold under counterfeit brand names by about 50 vendors at the Santuck Flea Market near Wetumpka, said ICE spokesman Bryan Cox.
"We're seizing everything from handbags and shoes to Dr. Dre headphones," Cox said. "It's a variety of counterfeit name-brand merchandise."
Agents loaded the confiscated goods onto a semi-truck. By Saturday afternoon, they had not yet tallied up the merchandise or its total estimated value.
The sprawling flea market remained open Saturday morning as agents shut down individual vendors after determining they were selling counterfeit goods. It wasn't immediately known if any arrests were made.
Federal agents conducted the flea market bust in coordination with Elmore County sheriff's deputies and Alabama state authorities.
Asked how customs agents were alerted to the Alabama market, Cox said only that it was the result of an ongoing investigation.
"This is something we've been looking at for several months," he said.
According to the federal government, customs and border patrol agents in the U.S. seized a total of $1.26 billion worth of counterfeit goods last year.
